Research reveals increased playtime helps reduce overweight and obesity in Children

What impacts does play time has on children? this is a frequent question from parents. A Clinical Research Fellow at the Kintampo   Health Research Centre, Dr Seyram Kaali, says children must be involved in physical activity for at least 60 minutes in a day to enable them to expend the calories they consume. He said more play time will help burn calories to reduce overweight and obesity. Dr Kaali said the frequent consumption of processed canned foods and beverages high in sugar and salt with low nutritional value and a lack of physical activity among children are the major causes of overweight and obesity in Ghana. He called for a food policy that will help to determine standards of the nutritional content of processed foods and canned beverages imported into Ghana. He said parents must be interested in the Body Mass Index of their children, monitor their weight and reduce fatty food in the diets of their children. How a child is fed in the first year of life may contribute to obesi

World Water Day 2024

Water can create peace or spark conflict. When water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal, or no access, tensions can rise between communities and countries. More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water. As climate change impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource. Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle. The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges. We must act upon the realization that water is not only a resource to be used and competed over – it

Back To School Tips For Parents

Back to School Here’s First News’ handy guide to helping you get ahead this school year. - Re-establish a morning routine. While you can relax the schedule a little, encourage a morning routine towards the end of summer. Encourage your kids to wake up no later than a certain time and try and do something healthy and productive for the first 30 minutes of their day, like reading , or catching up on the news. - Set up a breakfast station Make breakfast as stress-free as possible by getting all the food/drinks you need out and putting them in a certain area in your kitchen or dining room for your kids to access easily. Choose healthy, simple options that will set them up for the day.  Slide into a bedtime routine Bedtimes often slip thanks to the long summer nights. Beating Plastic pollution; our part at Shared Space

No to Plastic  In line with World Environment Day, which focuses on beating plastic pollution this year, Shared Space shared this sentiment and created painting canvases by recycling cardboard and bin bags for aprons in their first Sip and Paint event in 2023. Landfill-biodegradable aprons can be recycled or disposed of in the general rubbish bin. Once disposed of the landfill, biodegradation is accelerated approximately 90%+ faster than conventional plastic aprons, producing organic matter (a natural fertilizer) and no microplastics. We at the shared space will encourage all and sundry to get involved in beating plastic pollution by recycling. Enjoy some photos from the process.

Shared Space Day Out- K.N. Mausoleum, 1957 Gallery

On Wednesday, 5 th  August, 2023, we had the opportunity to go on an exciting and educational excursion with a group of twelve of Shared Space’s young learners to the newly commissioned Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and then to Kempinski’s Gallery 1957. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Visit Our first destination was the newly commissioned Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where we were fortunate to have an experienced tour guide accompany us. This guide provided us with a captivating narrative about the life and contributions of Ghana's founding father, Kwame Nkrumah. The children were not only attentive but also highly engaged, asking insightful questions that demonstrated their genuine interest in the history and legacy of this great leader. During our visit to the Memorial Park, we had the privilege of paying our respects at the tombs of Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia. This moment allowed the children to connect on a deeper level with the historical significance of the site. Gallery 19

Effects of screen time on early childhood development...

Team Shared Space thinks this is worth keeping and sharing. :) Hon. Dakoa Newman MP, Okaikwei South Constituency   Below is the speech delivered on the floor of Parliament by Dakoa Newman MP, Okaikwei South Constituency on the effects of screen time on early childhood development. Mr. Speaker, Thank you for the opportunity to speak on a matter that concerns all parents, including my good self. This has to do with the negative effects of screen time on early childhood development. Screen time refers to time spent with any screen including televisions, smart phones, tablets, video games and computers. Lately, screen time has become a more complex concept with an expanding variety of electronic media devices available at every home and even at early childhood education centres.   Researchers in South Africa in assessing the influence of screen time on language development have found that an increase in the amount of screen time at an early age has negative effects on language development.
